The FBI is investigating an attack that occurred in downtown Boulder,Colorado, according to FBI director Kash Patel. the Boulder Police Department confirmed that multiple individuals sustained injuries during the incident.
Colorado gov.Jared Polis stated he is closely monitoring the situation and expressed sympathy for those affected by what he termed a “heinous act of terror.” He added that hate-filled acts are unacceptable.
However, at a Sunday evening news conference, boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn clarified that authorities are not currently classifying the incident as a terror attack.
Police responded to calls around 1:26 p.m. local time regarding a man with a weapon and reports of people being set on fire near the Boulder courthouse, Redfearn said.
Upon arrival, officers found victims with burn injuries. A suspect was identified, apprehended, and taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to Redfearn.
Redfearn noted that the injuries ranged from minor to very serious. Police are also investigating a “vehicle of interest” at the cordoned-off scene.
The police chief urged patience and empathy for the victims, emphasizing that the attack was unacceptable. The incident occurred in a pedestrian mall area where a pro-Israel protest had taken place. Authorities are investigating whether the group was targeted, but Redfearn declined to speculate on a motive at this early stage.
The Boulder Jewish community Center released a statement noting that a group had been participating in a “Run for Their Lives” walk, an event held every Sunday in downtown Boulder to advocate for the release of hostages held by hamas. The center expressed sympathy for the victims and hoped the community would unite in response to the attack.
“Our hearts go out to those who witnessed this horrible attack, and prayers for a speedy recovery to those who were injured,” the statement from Boulder JCC said. “When events like this enter our own community, we are shaken. Our hope is that we come together for one another.”
What’s next
The inquiry is ongoing, and police will assess the motive to determine if increased security measures are necessary in the area.
