Bournemouth Boss Fumes Over Controversial Penalty in Thrilling West Ham Draw
Bournemouth, England - A dramatic late free-kick from Enes Unal salvaged a point for Bournemouth in a 1-1 draw against West Ham at the Vitality Stadium, but the result was overshadowed by controversy surrounding a contentious penalty decision.
Cherries boss Andoni iraola was left fuming after referee Chris Kavanagh awarded West Ham a penalty in the 87th minute following a VAR review. The decision came after Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s cross brushed the outstretched arm of Bournemouth midfielder Tyler Adams, an incident that went largely unnoticed by those inside the stadium.

Lucas paqueta coolly converted the spot-kick,sending the traveling West Ham fans into raptures. Though, their joy was short-lived as Unal responded with a stunning free-kick in the 90th minute, curling the ball into the top corner from around 30 yards out.
Iraola was incensed by the penalty decision, claiming it directly contradicted advice given to managers by Premier League referees before the season.
“I’m very, very disappointed with the penalty because it’s an action that we spoke about before the season started with the referees,” Iraola said. ”They gave expressly the instruction not to tell our players to defend with their hands behind their back because it was not natural.”
He added, “I said ‘OK, we give these instructions (to put hands behind backs) because it’s costing us penalties’ and he’s gone, ‘no, don’t worry, it’s natural, it’s not going to cost you’. Bam, the first one: penalty. It’s obviously natural as everyone that has played football, you go running to block a shot, a cross, you finish with one hand down, one up, it’s like this always.”
The controversial call overshadowed an otherwise entertaining encounter. Both sides had chances in a lively first half, with Antoine Semenyo hitting the woodwork for Bournemouth and Jarrod Bowen doing the same for West Ham.
Bournemouth improved after the break and created several opportunities before the late drama unfolded. The draw sees them climb to sixth in the Premier League table, level on points with Aston Villa. west Ham remain in 14th place.
Despite the disappointment of dropping two points, West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui remained positive. “It was a pity for us as we were very close to achieving the three points,” he said. “But it’s true that Unal scored a fantastic free-kick. It has been a very demanding match for both teams. We did very, very well in a lot of minutes. We were better than them in the first half.”
