Box Office Bombshell: ‘Inside Out’ Sinks with 50 Million Yuan Investment, Yet Only Scrapes Up 2.7 Million Yuan on Opening Day
Mainland China’s Box Office Sees Bleak Performance with New Releases
On September 7, four new films were released in mainland China, including low-cost films “Legend of No. 9” and “The Great Rescue of Egg Baby”, as well as big-budget films “Inside Out” and “Shining Boys: Air Relay”. Despite the new releases, the box office performance was more bleak than expected.
According to data from the box office platform Maoyan, the first-day box office of the baseball movie “Legend of No. 9” was only 168,000 yuan. Industry insiders analyzed that the film’s poor performance can be attributed to the fact that baseball is not a popular sport in China, and many viewers may not understand the rules. On the other hand, the animated film “Egg Rescue” performed slightly better, with a first-day box office of 2.57 million yuan.
“Shining Boys: Air Relay” is based on the true story of the Shijiazhuang No. 2 Middle School basketball team defeating Changsha Mingde Middle School in 0.7 seconds. However, the film’s box office performance was disappointing, with a first-day box office of only 758,000 yuan. It is estimated that the film’s regional focus may have limited its appeal to audiences in other parts of the country.
The film “Inside Out” had the worst box office performance since September, with a first-day box office of only 2.7 million yuan. Despite its big budget of 50 million yuan and an all-star cast, including He Huan, Wang Xun, Clara, Sun Yue, and Jiu Kong, the film failed to impress audiences.
“Inside Out” tells the story of Cai Yao, a young man who gains superpowers after an accident during brain surgery. The film explores themes of daydreaming and the desire to change one’s destiny, which may resonate with audiences in China. However, some viewers have criticized the film for its lack of filming techniques, rough costumes and makeup, and poor acting.
As of September 7, the film’s first-day box office was only 2.7 million yuan, and the final box office is expected to be less than 10 million yuan. If the film company takes 37% of the box office revenue, the film’s loss is estimated to be more than 40 million yuan, making it the first box office disaster in mainland China in September.
