Simpson, 28, joked about showing Alvarez around Barnsley, highlighting the town hall as a “ninth wonder of the world.” He noted the doubters who scoffed when he first mentioned fighting at Oakwell, yet he is now set to fight there for the second time in 10 months.
While a bout with Alvarez, who is slated to defend his titles against Terence Crawford in September, remains a distant prospect, Simpson is focused on the immediate future. He believes a world-title shot is within reach next year, provided he clears his next hurdle.
That hurdle is Ivan Zucco. simpson will face the undefeated Italian for the vacant European title on Saturday. Zucco has a reputation as a knockout artist, with 18 stoppages in 21 wins.
“He’s had more knockouts than I’ve had fights so I’m definitely not overlooking him,” Simpson said. “This is the next proper step.”
What’s next
Simpson’s immediate focus is on his upcoming fight against Zucco. A victory would considerably boost his chances of securing a world-title opportunity in the near future, potentially paving the way for his dream match against Alvarez.
