Inquest Reveals Details of BoyS Final Moments and Medical History
A heartbreaking inquest has shed light on the final moments of a four-year-old boy,Robbie, who tragically died after a choking incident. The hearing detailed the swift response of emergency services and explored the boy’s medical background, including concerns about his tonsils.
Ambulance Response and Hospital Transfer
Robbie was rushed to the University hospital limerick (UHL) by ambulance, arriving a few minutes after the incident. He was later transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin. His mother, Ms Power, testified that Robbie was in good spirits on the day of the incident and had no known infections.
Previous Choking Incidents and Eating Habits
Ms Power recounted that while Robbie had experienced previous choking incidents, they were typically resolved without the need for medical intervention. she stated that he had never had difficulty eating sausages before the fatal event. Though, she noted that from the age of two, robbie had a tendency to shove large amounts of food into his mouth whole, requiring his parents to hide items like wine gums from him.
Medical referrals and Unfulfilled Appointments
Medical records presented at the inquest revealed that Robbie had been referred to an ear, nose, and throat specialist at UHL earlier that year due to concerns about his tonsils and potential sleep apnoea.A second urgent referral was made by his GP, Gerard O’Brien, on july 12, 2022. Tragically, Robbie never got to see a specialist, and an appointment letter received two weeks after his death was torn up.
Autopsy Findings and Cause of Death
The inquest heard that Robbie had no pulse upon arrival at UHL but circulation was restored after 45 minutes. A consultant paediatric pathologist, John O’Neill, stated that an autopsy revealed enlarged tonsils but no evidence that they were obstructing his airway. Dr O’Neill attributed the cause of death to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a lack of oxygen and blood to the brain, and herniation of the brain, which compressed the brain stem. Encephalitis of the brain stem was identified as a contributory factor, though its impact on swallowing function could not be definitively proven.
Sausage in Throat and Coroner’s Observations
Dr O’Neill noted the presence of a piece of sausage in Robbie’s throat during the autopsy, suggesting it may have come up from his stomach rather than being the sole cause of obstruction. The coroner, Cróna Gallagher, expressed surprise at this finding and commented on the known difficulty children can have with eating sausages, citing their involvement in other choking cases. However, Dr O’Neill emphasized that any solid, dense food poses a choking risk to individuals of any age, though a four-year-old would typically be expected to manage a sausage without issue.
Verdict and Organ Donation
Returning a verdict of accidental death, Dr Gallagher extended her deepest sympathies to Robbie’s parents for what she described as a “very unfortunate accident with such tragic consequences.” The inquest concluded with the poignant revelation that robbie’s kidneys had been donated, saving the lives of other children.
