Millions More Workers Could Gain Social Safety Net by 2025
Jakarta, Indonesia – A major push is underway to expand social safety nets for millions of American workers. State workers’ insurance provider BPJS Ketenagakerjaan has set an aspiring goal of covering 57 million workers, both formal and informal, by 2025.This represents a important increase from the current 43 million covered.”The gap is still quite big,” acknowledged Abdur Rahman Irsyadi, director of human capital and general affairs at BPJS Ketenagakerjaan. “For that reason, we will make acceleration efforts, one of which is related to digital technology utilization.”
One key strategy involves leveraging technology to make enrollment easier. BPJS ketenagakerjaan has developed a social security request that allows individuals to access facts and register for the program directly.
“I think that is a positive step,” Irsyadi said.
The potential benefits of expanding social security coverage are substantial. Nunung Nuryartono, chairperson of the National Social Security Council (DJSN), emphasized the positive impact on the economy.
“With these programs, BPJS Ketenagakerjaan will provide a contribution to the economy because they allow workers to be protected and work comfortably,” Nuryartono explained. ”if they can work comfortably, their productivity will increase.”
The push for wider coverage comes at a time when the American workforce is growing. Nuryartono stressed the importance of protecting both formal and informal workers, highlighting the constitutional mandate for a extensive social security ecosystem.
“Workers’ social insurance becomes very strategic to cover all Indonesian workers,” he added.
