Indonesia’s National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) has revoked the distribution permits for 21 cosmetic products after discovering discrepancies between the ingredients and formulations listed on packaging and the actual contents of the products. This action underscores the BPOM’s commitment to consumer safety and adherence to stringent quality control standards within the Indonesian cosmetics industry.
Increased Scrutiny and Findings
The BPOM initiated intensified supervision following reports of inconsistencies in cosmetic products circulating in the market. This heightened oversight revealed that several products, notably those manufactured under contract, contained variations in ingredient types, ingredient levels, or both.
“We have received reports that the information listed on the packaging have been spreading. Thus, we have intensified supervision to follow up on this,” a BPOM representative stated.
these discrepancies aren’t merely labeling errors; they pose potential health risks to consumers. the BPOM warns that undeclared ingredients can trigger allergic reactions in sensitive individuals, and the actual benefits of a product may not align with the claims made on its packaging. This erodes consumer trust and highlights the importance of rigorous product testing and accurate labeling.
Regulatory Violations and Enforcement
The production and distribution of cosmetics that deviate from approved formulations constitute a violation of BPOM Regulation No. 21 of 2022 concerning Procedures for Submitting Cosmetic Notifications. This regulation is designed to ensure transparency and accountability throughout the cosmetic product lifecycle.
In response to these violations, the BPOM has taken decisive action:
Permit Revocation: Distribution permits for all 21 non-compliant products have been revoked.
Product Recall: Business actors have been ordered to immediately withdraw and destroy all affected products.
Compliance Reminder: the BPOM has reminded all cosmetic manufacturers and distributors to strictly adhere to applicable laws and regulations, including the Guidelines for Good Cosmetic Manufacturing Practices (CPKB). This includes ensuring each production batch precisely matches the formula approved during the notification process.
Protecting Consumers: How to Stay Safe
The BPOM is actively empowering consumers to protect themselves by providing resources and guidance. Individuals are strongly advised to:
Check Packaging: Carefully examine the packaging, label, distribution permit, and expiration date of cosmetic products before purchase and use.
Utilize CekKLIK: Verify product authenticity and safety by using the CekKLIK platform (https://cekklik.bpom.go.id/). This online tool allows consumers to quickly check if a product is registered and approved by the BPOM.
Report Suspicious Products: Report any suspected faulty or non-compliant products through the HALOBPOM Contact Center (1500533) or the local BPOM office. Your vigilance can help prevent others from experiencing adverse reactions.
