New York City Comptroller Brad lander, a Democratic candidate for mayor, was arrested Tuesday by federal agents at an immigration courthouse in Lower Manhattan. The arrest occurred as Lander protested the detention of a man by authorities amid rising tensions over immigration enforcement.
Lander was at the courthouse to observe immigration court hearings, prompted by increasing reports of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arresting undocumented immigrants during court appearances. A reporter captured the incident on video, showing Lander questioning agents about a judicial warrant as they approached a man he was standing near.
“I will let go when you show me the judicial warrant,” Lander said in the video, as he held onto the man. Agents then pulled lander away,eventually handcuffing him against a wall. An agent stated Lander was “obstructing,” to which lander replied he was simply standing in the hallway.
Meg Barnette, Lander’s wife, posted on his X account that Lander was detained by ICE after escorting a defendant out of the courthouse at 26 federal Plaza. She shared a video showing authorities escorting Lander in handcuffs into an elevator.
