Bradley Wiggins Battles Addiction and⁢ Bankruptcy After Cycling Glory

Updated May 31, 2025

Former cycling champion Bradley Wiggins has‌ opened up about his ‍post-career struggles with cocaine addiction and financial ruin. In an ‍interview, Wiggins described a ‌period where his addiction spiraled, impacting his family life ‌and leading to bankruptcy.

Wiggins, who ⁢achieved notable success ⁢with Team Sky between 2010 and 2015 under the guidance of Dave Brailsford and Rod ‌Ellingworth, winning the⁤ 2012 Tour de France and the ⁢2014 world time trial championship, faced challenges after his cycling career ended. His marriage ended ⁤in 2020, and his cycling team, founded in 2015, collapsed due‌ to a lack of sponsors.

The former champion described his addiction as a form of self-harm. He acknowledged the pain he inflicted on those around ⁢him.

“There were times my son thought I was going to be found dead in the morning,” Wiggins‍ said.

Jonathan Vaughters, Wiggins’ former team boss, suggested that the ‌intense dopamine rush‍ experienced during professional racing can make cyclists⁣ vulnerable to addiction. He noted⁤ wiggins’ intelligence and sensitivity, describing him as someone who “reads people like a book.”

“I mean, ultimately pro ⁤cyclists are always going to search for that dopamine hit they got while racing,” Vaughters said.

What’s next

Wiggins is‍ reportedly⁤ focused on recovery and rebuilding his life, aiming to move beyond the self-destructive patterns of his past and‌ repair relationships with his ⁢family.
