Heavy Alcohol Consumption Linked to Brain Damage, Memory Problems

These lesions, indicative of brain injury, correlate wiht impaired memory and cognitive function. The study involved analyzing data from 1,781 individuals with an average age of 75 at the time of their death. All participants underwent brain autopsies.
Researchers examined brain tissue for signs of injury, including tau tangles and hyaline arteriolosclerosis. Thay also recorded brain weight and participant height. Family members provided information regarding the participants’ alcohol consumption habits.
Participants were categorized into four groups: those who never drank (965), moderate drinkers consuming seven or fewer drinks per week (319), heavy drinkers consuming eight or more drinks per week (129), and former heavy drinkers (368). A single drink was defined as containing 14 grams of alcohol, equivalent to approximately 350 ml of beer, 150 ml of wine, or 45 ml of distilled spirits.
Vascular brain lesions were present in 40% of those who never drank, 45% of moderate drinkers, 44% of heavy drinkers, and 50% of former heavy drinkers.
After accounting for factors like age at death, smoking, and physical activity, heavy drinkers showed a 133% higher likelihood of vascular brain lesions compared to those who never drank. Former heavy drinkers had an 89% higher likelihood, and moderate drinkers, 60%.
The study also revealed that heavy and former heavy drinkers had increased odds of developing tau tangles, a biomarker linked to AlzheimerS disease, with 41% and 31% higher odds, respectively.
Former heavy drinking correlated with a lower brain mass ratio and diminished cognitive abilities. However, no such link was found between moderate or heavy drinking and brain mass ratio or cognitive abilities.
Justo pointed out that cognitive impairments were observed exclusively in former drinkers, in addition to brain injuries.
Furthermore, heavy drinkers experienced an average lifespan reduction of 13 years compared to those who never consumed alcohol.
“We found heavy drinking is directly linked to signs of injury in the brain, and this can cause long-term effects on brain health, which may impact memory and thinking abilities,” Justo said. “Understanding these effects is crucial for public health awareness and continuing to implement preventive measures to reduce heavy drinking.”
A limitation of the study was the absence of pre-death participant data, including the duration of alcohol consumption and cognitive abilities.

Further research is needed to understand the long-term effects of alcohol consumption on cognitive function and brain health. Public health initiatives aimed at reducing heavy drinking may help mitigate these risks.
