Consuming eight ⁣or more alcoholic beverages each week ⁣elevates the⁣ risk of developing brain lesions known as hyaline arteriolosclerosis, according⁣ to a ⁣recent⁢ study. These lesions, indicative of brain injury, ⁣correlate wiht impaired memory and⁤ cognitive function. The research, published April 9 in⁤ the journal Neurology, explores the‍ association between heavy drinking and potential⁤ brain damage.

The study involved analyzing data from 1,781 individuals with an average age‍ of 75 at the time of their death. All participants underwent brain autopsies.

Researchers examined brain tissue for signs ‍of⁣ injury, including tau tangles and hyaline arteriolosclerosis. ⁢Thay also recorded brain weight and ‍participant⁢ height. Family members provided information regarding the participants’ alcohol consumption habits.

Participants were categorized into four ‍groups: those who never ⁢drank (965), moderate drinkers consuming‍ seven or fewer drinks per week (319), heavy drinkers ⁤consuming eight or more drinks per week (129), and former heavy drinkers (368). A single drink was ⁤defined as containing 14 grams of alcohol, equivalent to ⁢approximately 350 ml of beer, 150‍ ml of wine, or 45 ml of distilled spirits.

Vascular brain lesions were present in ⁣40% of those⁢ who never drank, 45% ⁢of moderate drinkers, 44% ⁣of‍ heavy drinkers, and 50% of ⁤former heavy drinkers.

After accounting for factors like age at ⁤death, ‍smoking, and physical ⁤activity, heavy drinkers showed‍ a 133% higher likelihood⁣ of‍ vascular brain lesions‍ compared to those who never drank. Former heavy drinkers had an 89% higher likelihood, and ⁣moderate drinkers, 60%.

The study also revealed that heavy and former heavy drinkers had increased odds of developing tau tangles, a biomarker linked to AlzheimerS disease, with 41%⁣ and‍ 31% higher odds, ⁤respectively.

Former heavy ‍drinking correlated with a lower brain mass ⁢ratio and diminished cognitive abilities. However, no such link was found ⁤between moderate or heavy drinking and brain mass ratio‍ or cognitive abilities.

Justo pointed out that cognitive impairments were observed exclusively‍ in former drinkers, ⁢in ⁢addition to brain injuries.

Furthermore, ⁢heavy drinkers experienced an average‍ lifespan reduction of 13 years ⁣compared to those who never consumed alcohol.

“We found heavy drinking is directly linked to signs of injury in the brain, and this can cause long-term effects on brain health, which may impact memory and thinking abilities,” Justo said. “Understanding these effects is crucial for public health awareness and ⁤continuing ⁢to implement preventive measures to reduce heavy drinking.”

A ⁢limitation of the study was the ⁣absence of pre-death participant data, including the duration of alcohol ‍consumption and cognitive abilities.
