Yale University is set to launch a new “Brains, Minds, and Machines” certificate program designed to broaden the training of Ph.D. students interested in the intersection of neuroscience, psychology, linguistics, and physics. The program aims to provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of the brain and cognition.
Interdisciplinary Approach
According to McDougle, who will direct the new certificate, progress in understanding the brain and cognition requires knowledge and skills from various disciplines.The certificate program is designed to equip future scientists-including neuroscientists, psychologists, linguists, and physicists-with a broader intellectual toolkit.

Program Details and Eligibility
The “Brains, Minds, and Machines” certificate joins 16 existing academic program certificates offered by the Yale University Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS), providing complementary training to broaden a student’s Ph.D. work.
First-year Ph.D. students from any GSAS department are eligible to apply for the certificate. Though, the student’s dissertation advisor and an additional member of their thesis committee should be a faculty member of the Wu Tsai Institute.
Timeline and Launch
Full details of the certificate will be released in fall 2025, with applications opening in the spring semester of 2026. The inaugural cohort will begin certificate-related activities in their second year, in fall 2026.
An open house to learn more about the new Brains, Minds, and Machines certificate will be held on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at the Wu Tsai Institute (100 College Street).
