Brandy and Monica Announce “The Boy Is Mine” Co-Headlining Tour
R&B stars Brandy and Monica, once rumored rivals, are joining forces for their first-ever co-headlining tour. Dubbed “The boy Is Mine,” the tour pays tribute to their chart-topping 1998 duet.
The tour promises special appearances by Kelly Rowland, Muni Long, and recent “American Idol” winner Jamal Roberts. The Los Angeles area will host a show Nov. 9 at the Kia forum.
Brandy acknowledged the significance of the reunion. “Monica and I coming together again isn’t just about the music,” Brandy said. “It’s about honoring were we came from and how far we’ve both come.” She added that the song “means everything to me.”
“The Boy Is Mine” dominated the charts for 13 weeks after its release 27 years ago. Despite taking “different journeys” since then, the pair are reuniting to satisfy fan demand.
“God’s timing perfectly aligned us,” Brandy said.
The relationship between the two singers hasn’t always been smooth. A publicized incident in 1998 allegedly involved Monica punching Brandy before their MTV Video music Awards performance.
Both artists achieved early success. brandy’s self-titled debut album went platinum in 1994. Monica’s “Miss Thang” achieved platinum status in 1995. Brandy also pursued an acting career, including a role as Cinderella in 1997 and a part in the “Queens” series in 2021. Monica teased a country music pivot in 2022 with “Open Roads,” produced by Brandi Carlile, but the album remains unreleased.
Before this tour, Brandy and Monica collaborated on “It all Belongs to Me” in 2012 and a remix of “The Boy Is Mine” for Ariana Grande. They also appeared on “Verzuz” in 2021, where a lighthearted exchange referenced their past tensions.
During the “Verzuz” webcast, Monica alluded to her past, saying she had come a long way from “kicking in doors” and “smacking chicks.” Brandy playfully responded, “You sure was. I was one of the ones.” Monica downplayed the incident, and brandy apologized for her remark.
