miami – The Atlanta Braves will be without Chris Sale, their star pitcher and reigning National League Cy Young Award winner, after he suffered a fractured left rib cage. The team placed Sale on the 15-day injured list Saturday.
Braves manager brian Snitker saeid Sale felt discomfort during exercises Friday. Medical evaluation revealed the fracture.The injury is a blow to Atlanta’s pitching rotation as they chase the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East.
Sale, 36, is 5-4 this season with a 2.52 ERA in 15 starts. In his previous outing against the New York Mets,he pitched 8 2/3 innings,throwing a season-high 116 pitches. During that game, Sale made a diving stop on a ground ball from Juan Soto.
“it’s just a freak thing. An unfortunate thing,” Snitker said. He noted that Sale completed his postgame workout after the Mets game and felt some discomfort the next day before seeking medical attention Friday.
