Brazilian President Recovering Well After Brain Surgery
Brazilian President Lula Recovering Well After Second Brain Procedure
São Paulo, Brazil - Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is showing positive signs of recovery following a second procedure to address a brain hemorrhage, his medical team announced Thursday. The 79-year-old leader underwent a non-surgical procedure called a middle meningeal artery embolization, wich aims to prevent further bleeding. This followed emergency surgery on Tuesday to drain a brain hematoma, a delayed result of a fall Lula suffered in October.
“Today’s procedure was to prevent further bleeding,” explained neurosurgeon dr. Marcos Stavale. “It blocked blood flow to the site of the original bleed, so now there is maximum safety, and the risk of another bleed is statistically negligible.”
Lula’s personal physician, cardiologist Dr. Roberto Kalil Filho, reported that the president is “awake and talking” after the Thursday procedure, which involved sedation but not general anesthesia.
Dr. Filho added that Lula is expected to be moved out of the intensive care unit on Friday and discharged from the Sírio-Libanês hospital in São Paulo early next week.
While Lula’s medical team has emphasized that his cognitive abilities remain unaffected, they have advised him to avoid physical and mental exertion during his recovery.”He is cognitively fine and neurologically fit. He’s normal,” stated neurologist Dr.Rogério Tuma. “Lula is in very good health and capable of performing any civil activities … but the medical recommendation is for him to avoid working, avoid stress, and not receive visitors while he remains in hospital.”
