Brazil’s Bolsonaro Indicted in Alleged Coup Plot: Key Details Revealed
Jair Bolsonaro Indicted in Coup Plot Investigation
Brazilian authorities have indicted former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 others. This move is part of an investigation into a plot to retain power after Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the presidency in 2022.
Bolsonaro denies the allegations. He stated on social media that he has not seen the indictment and will await legal counsel before responding.
The indictment lists several high-profile figures, including former aides, politicians from Bolsonaro’s government, and retired generals such as Walter Braga Netto and Augusto Heleno. Fernando Cerimedo, a political consultant to Argentina’s President Javier Milei, is also included.
Others indicted are Bolsonaro’s former intelligence chief, Alexandre Ramagem, and former congressman Valdemar Costa-Neto. Anderson Torres, a former Minister of Justice, and military personnel such as Colonels Anderson Lima de Moura and Carlos Giovani Delevati Pasini are also involved.
The indictment follows recent arrests connected to the same investigation. Authorities say the alleged coup plot included plans to assassinate Lula’s Vice President and a Supreme Court Justice. The plotters also proposed forming a new government office that they would control.
According to reports, Bolsonaro allegedly met with military officials in December 2022 to discuss a plan to maintain power. He criticized Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who is overseeing the investigation, accusing him of misconduct.
Bolsonaro’s son, Flavio, defended his father, claiming that thinking about murder is not a crime unless it occurs.
In the 2022 presidential election, Lula narrowly defeated Bolsonaro. Following the election, Bolsonaro’s supporters rioted in Brasilia.
