Breaking a 371-Year Glass Ceiling: Universidad del Rosario Elects First Female Rector in Historic Milestone

This is the surgeon, with specialties and doctorate, Ana Isabel Gómez Córdoba, who contributed to implement the electronic medical record.

Since it was founded in 1653 by Fray Cristóbal de Torres, under the name Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario, this is the first time that a woman, with great academic and professional qualities, has taken its direction.

Ana Isabel Gómez Córdoba, the new rector is a surgeon with specializations in paediatrics, public health management and medical health law from the Universidad del Rosario, a master’s degree in Bioethics from the Universidad El Bosque, with a laureate thesis and a doctor of Sciences Law from the Pontifical University of Javeriana, with a summa cum laude degree, an honorable mention and the Xaverian Order of Merit.

Throughout his career, he has held several teaching, research, extension, and academic and administrative leadership roles at the Universidad del Rosario, contributing significantly to the development of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Jurisprudence.

His work has also had an impact beyond academia. He has participated in wide projects in the Colombian health system, such as the implementation of electronic medical records and care processes of the health services network in Colsubsidio.

Her possession not only represents progress towards gender equality in the highest areas of educational leadership, but also the beginning of a period of transformation for the university, led by a woman whose commitment to education and social transformation is unquestionable.

In her speech, the new rector referred to the need to transform the university, adapting to the challenges of the present without losing its historical essence. “The university I receive today and the one I have to give to whoever comes after me cannot be the same. Although it has to keep its identity and keep everything that differentiates us from others, which is great and unique, it also needs to transform,” he said.

In line with this vision, he emphasized the importance of a change in organizational culture, in order to foster a safe environment for everyone.

On the other hand, he paid tribute to the women who paved the way at the Universidad del Rosario, recognizing their intelligence, character and perseverance as pioneers in their professions, and highlighted the achievements of figures such as Cecilia Hernández Marino, Carmen de Zulueta y Cebrián, Olga Villa Mejía and many others.
