The list, which compiles the top 100 shows of the era, was built through an extensive industry survey consulting more than 500 actors, showrunners, executives, and other television professionals.

To compile the inventory, The New York Times surveyed hundreds of industry figures and asked them to vote for their top 10 television series. The final roster reflects the opinions of more than 500 participants, including actors Elisabeth Moss, Adam Scott, Bryan Cranston, Rose Byrne, Colman Domingo, and Jason Bateman. Writers and directors such as Damon Lindelof, Lena Dunham, Lena Waithe, and Noah Hawley also contributed ballots to the project. The publication enforced a strict temporal criterion for the project, limiting consideration to productions that premiered on or after January 1, 2000. That cutoff excluded several iconic late-1990s titles, most notably HBO’s The Sopranos, which premiered in 1999 and is widely credited with helping launch the golden age of modern television.
