Breaking Down Barriers: Lee Ka-chiu’s Heartfelt Visit to Shatin Unveils the Unmet Needs of People with Disabilities and Their Caregivers
Chief Executive Li Ka-chiu Conducts On-Site Consultation in Sha Tin District
Chief Executive Li Ka-chiu visited Sha Tin District to conduct on-site consultation on the implementation of the policy address in the district. He emphasized the importance of understanding the needs of the community, particularly those with disabilities and caregivers.
Li Ka-chiu began his visit by meeting with families of people with disabilities and caregivers to understand whether district support services meet their requirements. He also visited a day community rehabilitation center to learn about the services provided to support persons with disabilities and their caregivers.
Accompanied by the Secretary for Housing, Mr. Ho Wing-yin, Li Ka-chiu visited Green Heron House in Sha Kok Estate, which involves renovated public housing units that had been taken back under the policy to combat abuse of public housing. He emphasized the government’s efforts to provide more flats to those waiting for public housing.
Li Ka-chiu also interacted with residents in the area, including primary school students, to understand their living conditions and concerns. He encouraged students to study hard and be filial to their parents, and also encouraged them to engage in physical activities.
During his visit, Li Ka-chiu also met with citizens who expressed their concerns and opinions on various issues, including the distribution of consumer coupons. He emphasized the importance of reflecting both positive and negative opinions to solve problems and improve the overall life of citizens.
Support for People with Disabilities and Caregivers
Li Ka-chiu highlighted the government’s efforts to support people with disabilities and caregivers, including the provision of day community rehabilitation centers and respite care places. He also mentioned the injection of NT$1 billion into the Elderly Rehabilitation Fund to help those in need.
Li Ka-chiu visited a family with a mother in her 70s and a daughter in her 40s living together. The daughter suffers from muscular dystrophy and uses a wheelchair to move around, making it difficult for her to take care of herself. Li Ka-chiu praised the mother’s dedication and optimism in caring for her daughter despite her own physical challenges.
Renovated Public Housing Units
Li Ka-chiu pointed out that the government has taken back 5,000 units in combating the abuse of public housing, which is equivalent to a medium-sized housing estate and helps 5,000 households. He emphasized the government’s efforts to provide more flats to those waiting for public housing.
