Teikyo University’s Joint Medical Faculty Course Fosters Interprofessional Collaboration
Medical Communication Class Held at Itabashi Campus
Teikyo University’s Itabashi Campus recently hosted a joint medical faculty course titled “Medical Communication,” bringing together students from the Faculty of Medicine, Department of Medicine, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Medical Technology, Department of Nursing, and Department of Clinical Laboratory Science. This multi-professional collaborative education aims to equip students with the skills necessary for effective team medical care.
The course, attended by approximately 550 fourth-year students, focused on the theme of “Planning a treatment and rehabilitation policy for a woman diagnosed with cancer and a hereditary tumor.” Students worked in teams of 7-8, utilizing a dedicated textbook, “Medical Communication, 2nd Edition,” to develop communication skills and problem-solving strategies.
Through group work, students shared information, created problem lists, and presented treatment plans. They then watched a video of a multi-disciplinary conference on the same clinical case, featuring a team of professionals from the University Hospital. This unique opportunity allowed students to witness the importance of interprofessional communication and collaboration in a real-world setting.
A Q&A session with members of the medical team provided students with valuable insights into the significance of team medical care and multi-disciplinary collaboration. The medical team offered encouragement and advice, emphasizing the importance of effective communication in modern medicine.
Teikyo University remains committed to promoting interprofessional collaborative education across medical faculties, fostering talent who can contribute to team medical care and make a positive impact in the healthcare industry.
