Former Tainan County Assembly Speaker Wu Jianbao Passes Away at 74

Wu Jianbao was sentenced to prison for his involvement in professional baseball match-fixing and other cases. In May this year, Wu Jianbao was in and out of the hospital frequently because he needed kidney dialysis. A few days before he was diagnosed with cancer, his family members one after another. A funeral was organized in the afternoon to express their concern.

Wu Jianbao, nicknamed “Bao Er”, is a child from Rende District, Tainan City. He was originally elected as a councilor of Tainan County since 1998 and served as Deputy Speaker. After being sentenced, he fled to the Philippines before being jailed in 2014. However, there were often rumors of poor health. He was taken back to Taiwan in 2019, and the court ordered him to serve a 10-year sentence concurrently under supervision. He applied for parole and was released from prison in May.
