Spanish Scientists Achieve Complete Remission in Pancreatic Cancer Trials
Spanish researchers have achieved complete remission of pancreatic cancer in a small trial, offering a critically important, though early, step toward a potential cure.A team led by renowned cancer researcher Mariano Barbacid spent years conducting laboratory studies, animal testing, and human cell trials, all of wich proved accomplished.
“All cancer cells disappeared. After treatment ended, they did not return. We found no significant side effects,” Barbacid stated during a presentation of the findings. “This is an important step toward a cure, but further research is needed.”
barbacid has dedicated years to finding a way to combat pancreatic cancer. After a promising lead in 2019, he and his team continued their work for an additional six years. They focused on simultaneously attacking three key components of cancer cells with three different medications. This approach was chosen because pancreatic cancer cells are known to quickly develop resistance to single-drug therapies.
Currently, a drug available since 2021 only provides patients with a few extra months of life before the cancer cells adapt and render the medication ineffective.
While the treatment developed by the spanish team isn’t yet ready for clinical use, Lola Manterola, director of the Cris Cancer Foundation, expressed optimism.”This is a very important day for cancer research in Spain and the world,” she said.
