The Challenges of Cancer Care Access
Despite advancements in cancer treatment, important barriers to access remain, particularly regarding financial burdens and logistical hurdles. Dr. Shyamala Gunturi, a medical oncologist at Lowell General Hospital, highlights the difficulties patients face even *with* insurance. These include high deductibles, co-pays, and the non-medical costs associated with treatment - transportation, lodging, and lost wages – which can quickly become overwhelming.
“It’s not just about the drug itself,” dr. Gunturi explains. “It’s about getting to the appointments, affording the medications even *after* insurance, and managing everything else life throws at you while you’re fighting for your health.”
TeamWalk Lowell: A lifeline for Patients
To address these obstacles, the Lowell, Massachusetts community organizes TeamWalk each year, a citywide fundraising event that has become a critical source of support for local cancer patients. The event draws widespread participation, with individuals walking in remembrance of loved ones lost to cancer and in solidarity with those currently undergoing treatment.
TeamWalk has raised substantial funds, reaching up to $700,000 in recent years, according to event organizers. TeamWalk, a program of the Lowell General Hospital, directs 100% of the funds raised to direct patient support. This support encompasses essential needs such as transportation to treatment centers, assistance with medication co-pays before insurance coverage kicks in,and provisions for necessities like wigs or other items not covered by insurance.
Dr. Gunturi emphasizes the careful allocation of these funds: “They are very specific about what this money can be used for,and I’m so glad that they are so strict, because that means that the patients get it.”
Beyond fundraising: A Holistic Approach to Cancer Care
Local initiatives like TeamWalk underscore a crucial point: progress in cancer treatment must be accompanied by robust access initiatives. Dr. Gunturi advocates for a multi-faceted approach, encompassing community partnerships, policy changes, fundraising efforts, and collaboration with insurance companies to reduce drug costs.
“Not just publishing better and newer drugs, but making sure that they actually reach everyone,” she stresses. “We need community partnerships, policy changes at the government level, fundraising, and partnerships with insurance companies to come up with ways to deliver these drugs to patients at a low cost.”
The rising cost of cancer care is a national concern. According to a report by the Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker, the average cost of cancer care in the United States exceeds $16,000 per year, even for those with insurance. This financial strain can lead to treatment delays or abandonment, negatively impacting patient outcomes.
