Four years after the sudden death of her son, Jamal Edwards, Brenda Edwards is channeling her grief into a lasting legacy of support for young creatives. Today, February 20, 2026, marks the anniversary of Edwards’ passing, and also the opening of the Jamal Edwards Self Belief Creative Community Hub in west London.

The hub, launched by the Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust – a charity founded by Edwards and her daughter, Tanisha Artman, shortly after Jamal’s death in February 2022 – aims to provide resources and opportunities for young people, echoing Jamal’s own commitment to fostering talent. Jamal Edwards, who died at the age of 31, was a pioneering DJ and music entrepreneur best known for founding the online music platform SBTV.

“It’s really quite scary to think that it’s four years this Friday,” Edwards told the Press Association. Despite the passage of time, the pain of loss remains palpable. “There’s not a day that I obviously don’t speak to him in my mind. I really feel his presence and that that really helps me. It’s really hard every day. But I know he is watching saying: ‘Come on, mummy, come on.’”

The opening of the hub isn’t simply a memorial; it’s a continuation of Jamal’s life’s work. Edwards emphasized that the trust is actively “transforming what he was doing and what he wanted me to address, which was helping young people and bringing everybody together as a community.” The initiative seeks to build on the foundation Jamal laid with SBTV, which played a crucial role in launching the careers of numerous UK artists, including Dave, Jessie J, and Ed Sheeran.

For Edwards, the charity work has become a vital coping mechanism. “My work with the trust has been absolutely pivotal,” she stated, describing it as the “driving force” in helping her navigate her grief. “The fact that I know that I’m trying to carry on his legacy to help young people is an amazing feeling.” This sentiment underscores the deeply personal connection between her grief and her commitment to the trust’s mission.

The Jamal Edwards Self Belief Trust isn’t just focused on music. The “Creative Community Hub” designation suggests a broader scope, encompassing various artistic disciplines and providing a space for collaboration and skill development. This aligns with Jamal’s broader vision of empowering young people through creativity, regardless of their chosen field.

Jamal Edwards’ impact extended beyond the music industry. He was also an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust and was awarded an MBE in 2014 for his services to music. This recognition highlighted his dedication to social impact and his ability to inspire others.

The launch of the hub represents a significant milestone for the trust and a powerful tribute to Jamal Edwards’ enduring legacy. It’s a testament to the strength of a mother’s love and a commitment to ensuring that her son’s vision continues to thrive, offering opportunities for the next generation of creatives. The trust’s work, as Edwards articulates, is about more than just remembrance; it’s about actively building the future Jamal envisioned – a future where young people are empowered to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.
