Brendan Madden, Beloved Galway Husband and Grandfather, Dies at 76
Gort, Co. Galway – Brendan Madden, a man remembered for his infectious laugh and lifelong love of hurling, passed away peacefully on , at University College Hospital Galway (UCHG) after a short illness. He was 76 years old.
His passing occurred on what would have been the 40th birthday of his cherished daughter, Laura, a poignant coincidence described by family as though he was “called home to be with her.” Laura predeceased her father, as did his sister Rose and brother Kevin and nephews Lee and Jason.
Brendan is survived by his wife, Patricia, whom he shared a deep and loving bond with as her soulmate and best friend. He also leaves behind his daughters, Yvonne and Sandra, and four grandchildren – Shay, Leo, Louis, and Daithí – who brought him “endless joy.” His sons-in-law, Patrick and David, also mourn his loss.
The death notice describes Brendan as “one of life’s true characters,” a wonderful husband, father, grandad, brother, uncle, and friend. Those who knew him recall a man whose booming laughter often preceded his arrival and who never hesitated to share a joke, “good or wonderfully bad.”
A lifelong passion for horses and sport defined much of Brendan’s life. He was a dedicated supporter of hurling, rarely missing a match to watch his sons play. This commitment to his family and community was a hallmark of his character.
Reposing will take place at St Anne’s Church, Shanaglish, on , from to . A Mass to Celebrate Brendan’s Life will be held on , at , followed by burial in the new cemetery in Shanaglish, beside his daughter Laura.
