A Tragic Loss for the Metal Community
Brent Hinds, the co-founder and former lead guitarist of the acclaimed heavy metal band Mastodon, died late Wednesday night in Atlanta following a motorcycle accident. He was 51 years old. The Fulton County Medical examiner’s office confirmed his death to Atlanta News first.
According to police reports, Hinds was riding a Harley davidson when the accident occurred. The driver of a BMW SUV reportedly failed to yield, resulting in the collision.
From Alabama Roots to Metal Pioneers
born William Brent Hinds in Helena, Alabama, in 1974, Hinds moved to Atlanta in the late 1990s. there, he joined forces with Troy Sanders in the band Four Hour Fogger, a partnership that would ultimately lead to the formation of Mastodon in 2000, alongside Brann Dailor and Bill Kelliher.
Mastodon quickly distinguished itself as a groundbreaking force in the metal scene, blending elements of grunge, progressive rock, and southern rock into a uniquely compelling sound. hinds’ early experience playing the banjo reportedly influenced the band’s often unconventional and complex song structures.
A Legacy of Innovation and Eight Studio Albums
Over two decades, Mastodon released eight studio albums, beginning with their debut, “Remission,” in 2002 on Relapse Records. They signed with Reprise Records in 2005, releasing “Blood Mountain” the following year. Their discography continued with critically acclaimed albums, culminating in 2021’s “Hushed and Grim.”
The band’s innovative approach earned them a dedicated following and solidified their place as one of the most crucial metal bands of their generation.
Recent Departure and Band’s Response
Hinds’ departure from Mastodon earlier this year was marked by some controversy. While the band initially stated in a social media post that the split was mutual, Hinds publicly claimed he was ejected from the group and expressed strong criticism of his former bandmates.
Mastodon released a heartfelt statement on Instagram on Thursday, expressing their profound sadness and shock. “We are heartbroken, shocked, and still trying to process the loss of this creative force… Our hearts are with Brent’s family, friends, and fans,” the statement read. They requested privacy during this tough time.
