Poison frontman Bret Michaels has officially withdrawn from the Freedom 250 Great American State Fair, adding to a growing list of musical acts distancing themselves from the National Mall celebration. The departure follows a wave of scrutiny regarding the event’s political associations and a shrinking roster of performers.

Michaels announced his exit in a statement, noting that while he initially viewed the concert series as a celebration of all Americans regardless of political affiliation, he ultimately determined that the environment had become divisive and dangerous. The singer also cited specific threats directed at himself, his band, and his crew following the initial announcement of the lineup.

In his statement, Michaels emphasized that his decision was rooted in safety and personal conviction rather than political alignment.

This isn’t about politics. It’s about staying true to what I’ve always believed in. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. That’s one of the freedoms our veterans fought for and something I’ve always respected. But as a father, friend and bandmate, I have to take threats and safety concerns seriously. Bret Michaels

The exodus of talent has accelerated quickly. According to reporting from SPIN, several other high-profile artists have either withdrawn or publicly denied their participation since the roster was revealed. These include country singer Martina McBride, The Commodores, Morris Day & the Time, and Young MC.

Martina McBride addressed her decision on May 28, 2026, expressing concern that her association with the event could be misinterpreted by her audience. McBride stated that she has spent her career singing about real people with real issues and expressed distress at the possibility that fans might feel she was abandoning the meaning behind her music.

It greatly upsets me that any fan who has been moved by my music may now feel like I’m abandoning the meaning behind those songs. I assure you, that is not the case. Martina McBride

Event Organization and Political Context

The Great American State Fair is organized by Freedom 250, an organization partnering with the White House Task Force 250, which is led by Donald Trump. The concert series is designed to celebrate the United States’ semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.

The events are scheduled to take place on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., running from June 25 through July 10, 2026. Despite the departures of several headlining acts, organizers maintain that Freedom 250 is a nonpartisan initiative intended to unite the country through a celebration of American history.

The rollout of the event has been described as chaotic, with the initial artist roster drawing immediate backlash for its disparate mix of genres and eras, which included artists ranging from 1990s dance-pop to contemporary country and classic R&B.

Remaining Lineup

While many artists have exited, a small group of performers remains committed to the series. Currently, Vanilla Ice, Flo Rida, C+C Music Factory, and Milli Vanilli are still scheduled to perform.

Rob Morvan, the lone original member of Milli Vanilli, defended his decision to participate, stating that his goal is to entertain rather than divide. Morvan indicated that he views the event as an opportunity to take a trip down memory lane while honoring the anniversary of the United States.

I am here to entertain and unite people, not divide them. Let’s celebrate life and music and take a trip down memory lane. I feel honored to be a part of as it will celebrate the 250 year anniversary of America with so many other accomplished artists. Rob Morvan

The event continues to proceed as planned, though the shrinking lineup highlights the ongoing tension between large-scale national celebrations and the political identities of the artists invited to perform.
