Brian Wilson,the creative force behind The Beach Boys and a pioneer in pop music,has died at the age of 82.His family announced his death Wednesday in a social media post.
“We are heartbroken,” his children wrote, asking for privacy as they grieve. “We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love & Mercy.”
Last year, Wilson was placed under conservatorship after his family and friends stated he could no longer care for himself, following a dementia diagnosis. This followed the death of his wife, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, who had been his caregiver.Wilson battled mental illness for much of his life, including a nervous breakdown in 1964 that led him to stop touring regularly with The Beach Boys to focus on songwriting and production.
Born in Inglewood,California,on June 20,1942,Wilson formed The Beach Boys in 1961 with his brothers Dennis and Carl Wilson,cousin Mike love,and friend Al Jardine. The band became known for its vocal harmonies and chart-topping hits such as “Surf City,” “I Get Around,” “Help Me,Rhonda,” and “Good Vibrations.” Their 1966 album, “Pet Sounds,” is considered a creative high point and influenced The Beatles’ “Sgt.Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
Wilson’s impact on pop music is undeniable. His experimental approach to composition, production, and musical textures pushed the boundaries of what pop could achieve.
Melinda was more than my wife. She was my savior. She gave me the emotional security I needed to have a career. She encouraged me to make the music that was closest to my heart. She was my anchor. She was everything for us. Please say a prayer for her.
A biographical film, “Love & Mercy,” explored Wilson’s relationship with Ledbetter, with Paul Dano and Elizabeth Banks portraying them, respectively. Paul Giamatti played eugene landy.

A long-lost country album recorded by Brian Wilson in the early 1970s, including a track called ‘Cows In The Pasture,’ is slated for release sometime in 2025.
