Brian Windhorst: NBA Europe will limit American players

NBA Europe will limit the number of American basketball players while heavily emphasizing local European talent, ESPN journalist Brian Windhorst reported. Speaking on the Brian Windhorst and The Hoop Collective podcast during a trip to the Philippines, Windhorst stated that the ongoing internationalization of the NBA will accelerate as the league moves forward with its plans to establish a separate European competition, Lrytas reported.

NBA Expands into Europe with Player Investments

Windhorst asserted that the NBA is actively expanding into Europe and will couple the launch with guaranteed investments in European players as a primary selling point for the new project. According to the ESPN journalist, participating clubs will be required to expand their player squads to manage a dual schedule spanning both local domestic leagues and the new European competition.

NBA Prepares for Initial Losses in Europe

The projected league structure will utilize localized teams based in cities such as London and Rome to bolster the profile of European prospects. Windhorst noted that league leadership is fully prepared to absorb initial financial setbacks or external criticism during the early rollout phases, drawing a parallel to the sustained financial backing historically provided to the WNBA.
