Updated June 15,2025
KUNDAMALA,India — A tragic bridge collapse in India’s Pune district claimed the lives of at least four people Sunday. The incident occurred on a footbridge over the Indrayani River, a popular tourist destination in western India. Authorities reported that over 50 people were injured, with eight in critical condition.
The bridge collapse happened around 3:30 p.m. local time when a section of the structure gave way. The bridge role as a vantage point for visitors enjoying the surroundings contributed to the high number of people on it at the time. Emergency services, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and fire brigade, deployed cranes to lift the collapsed iron structure and conduct rescue operations.
The role of infrastructure safety in India has come under scrutiny following the incident. The collapse occurred in the Kundamala area of Pune district, which has experienced heavy rains recently, causing a steady flow in the Indrayani River. However, reports indicate it was not raining when the bridge failed.
Girish Mahajan, the state minister for disaster management, stated on X that the injured were admitted to Atharva Hospital in Talegaon. He added that the chief minister met with the patients to ensure they receive the best possible treatment. Mahajan also noted that a signboard warned people against standing on the bridge, but it was seemingly ignored.
Umakant Dalvi, a survivor, said the bridge was overcrowded, leaving no room to move. “everyone started running towards the main road as the structure haved and collapsed,” Dalvi said.
What’s next
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the bridge collapse. The incident has raised concerns about infrastructure safety in India, notably regarding bridges and highways.
