Bridge7 Acquires Slumdog Millionaire Sequel Rights from Celador
Bridge7, a production company founded by former Netflix executive Swati Shetty and former CAA agent Grant Kessman, has acquired the film sequel and TV rights to Slumdog Millionaire. The rights were obtained from UK-based Celador, which produced the Oscar-winning film in 2008.
Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simon Beaufoy, Slumdog Millionaire tells the story of 18-year-old Jamal, played by Dev Patel. Jamal’s challenging life in Mumbai leads him to win a quiz show.
It is uncertain if Patel, Freida Pinto, and other original cast members will return for the sequel, which will explore “the next chapter of Jamal’s journey.”
The original film was a major success, winning 8 Oscars, including Best Director and Best Picture. It also won several BAFTAs and Golden Globes. Composer A.R. Rahman received two Oscars for the film’s score and its popular song, Jai Ho.
Shetty and Kessman expressed that Slumdog Millionaire leaves a lasting impact. They believe its universal themes resonate across cultures.
This announcement marks Bridge7’s first project since its launch in June 2023. Paul Smith CBE, Chairman of Celador International, is excited about the collaboration.
Swati Shetty has 25 years of experience in various roles, including her recent work on the Netflix film Wedding Season. Grant Kessman worked for two decades at CAA, where he focused on European writers and TV projects.
Paytre Topp in Los Angeles and Nick Miller in the UK represented Bridge7 in the deal, while Jessica Hudson and James Kay represented Celador International.
