The series began with Sam reluctantly performing karaoke with her friend Joel (Jeff Hiller), revealing her hidden musical talent. Everett told Variety that her character has grown considerably as Season 1, constantly pushing herself forward despite her instinct to retreat. This personal growth is mirrored by Everett’s own experiences.

Director Lennon Parham aimed to capture Everett’s performance authentically, using three cameras to record every moment.Everett’s history of closing her cabaret shows with “The Climb” made her a natural fit for the song.
Everett expressed gratitude to those who secured the rights to “The Climb,” emphasizing its importance to the show. The final season also features an original song co-written by Everett and inspired by Tim Bagley’s stories of his late partner, Bill. This intimate performance, directed by Robert Cohen, showcased the show’s emotional depth and the talent of its cast.
“For me, she has grown about a thousand miles from where she was in Season 1… It’s always her instinct to retreat, but she’s pushing herself forward. It was beneficial for Bridget Everett, to, to watch that and to learn from it.”
