Network Rail has announced a significant infrastructure investment program on the Brighton Main Line, featuring a nine-day closure of a key section of the route from Saturday, February 13 to Sunday, February 21, 2027. The closure will affect the lines between Three Bridges and Brighton/Lewes to facilitate a concentrated program of safety and reliability improvements.
The works are scheduled to coincide with the February half-term in 2027, a period Network Rail identified as having lower travel volumes and higher flexibility for workers. According to the organization, this extended closure is designed to reduce the necessity for frequent weekend closures in the future.
Scope of Engineering Works
The investment focuses on several critical areas of the railway’s infrastructure, including track renewal, earthworks, drainage, and structural maintenance. The program aims to reduce faults and improve journey reliability on one of the UK’s most intensively used rail corridors.

- Track Renewal: Installation of new rails at Plumpton and Haywards Heath, along with renewed track and switches and crossings at Preston Park. Performance boosts and delay reductions are expected via additional improvements at Keymer Junction near Wivelsfield.
- Earthworks and Stabilization: Strengthening and stabilization works at the Balcombe Stamford rock cutting and the Haywards Heath cutting to mitigate the risk of rock falls and landslips.
- Drainage and Tunnels: Repairs to drainage systems at Stone Hall Bridge near Balcombe and structural works at Balcombe Tunnel to ensure safe operation and prevent flooding.
- Bridge Maintenance: Essential maintenance on the historic Ouse Valley Viaduct to preserve the structure for the long term.
Operational Impact and Service Alterations
The closure will impact several operators, including Gatwick Express, Southern, and Thameslink. While buses will replace trains on all affected routes, Southern Rail has stated that direct trains will continue to operate between Brighton and London via an alternative route through Littlehampton, though this will result in extended journey times.
This nine-day closure is part of a broader timeline of essential works. Network Rail has scheduled other closures on the Brighton Main Line for 2026, specifically on Sunday, May 3. Saturday, October 10 and Sunday, October 11; and Sunday, November 29. On these dates, the line will be closed between Three Bridges and Brighton, Lewes, and Hove.
Further disruptions are planned for early 2027, with no trains running between Gatwick Airport and Purley or East Croydon on Sunday, January 10, 2027. Passengers have been advised that significant engineering works will occur in the Redhill area during the Christmas period and into the New Year.
Strategic Justification
The scale of the February 2027 closure is attributed to the size and complexity of the engineering tasks, which Network Rail stated cannot be completed during regular weekend closures. The company has already executed smaller-scale works in early 2026, including the installation of new rails at Purley, wheel timber installation near the Brighton Road bridge at Coulsdon South, and earthworks near Merstham to prevent future landslips.
Lucy McAuliffe, Network Rail’s Sussex route director
The Brighton Main Line is one of the busiest rail corridors in the country, with complex and intensively used infrastructure. This work is vital to reduce faults, improve journey reliability and keep services running safely for years to come.
Network Rail and train operators are urging passengers to plan ahead for the February 2027 dates. Journey planners will be updated closer to the commencement of the works.
