Solar Power drives Sustainability Across Facilities
Five leisure centres operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) have collectively generated one million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy, enough to power 370 homes or 500 electric vehicles for an entire year. This achievement underscores a commitment to reducing environmental impact and operational costs.
Withdean Leisure Center led the effort, producing over 500,000 kWh of electricity through its solar panel array.Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre,Portslade Sports Centre,Prince Regent Sports Complex, and Stanley Deason Leisure Centre contributed the remaining energy generation.
Cost Savings and Grid Contribution
The implementation of solar power is demonstrably reducing operating expenses and carbon emissions for the facilities. notably, 97% of the electricity generated at the Prince Regent Sports Complex is directly consumed by the centre itself, maximizing on-site renewable energy utilization.
any surplus electricity generated is exported back to the national grid, creating an additional revenue stream to further offset operational costs. Matt Wickham,Chief Operating Officer at Freedom leisure, emphasized the long-term benefits, stating that the solar panels are “cutting costs, lowering emissions and making our centres more sustainable for the future.”
Investing in a Greener Future
This initiative represents a significant step towards BHCC’s sustainability goals and demonstrates the potential for renewable energy integration within public leisure facilities. The success of this project could serve as a model for other councils and organizations seeking to reduce their carbon footprint and enhance energy independence.
