Rising Star Joins South Sydney
The South Sydney Rabbitohs have secured the services of Latrell Siegwalt, the reigning Queensland Cup rookie of the year, on a two-year contract beginning in 2026. The 24-year-old will initially join the club on a supplementary deal, with plans for elevation to the top 30 squad in 2027.
Siegwalt’s path to the NRL is notable. Discovered in wagga Wagga by former Redcliffe Dolphins coach and current Brisbane Broncos assistant Ben te’o, he excelled at both fullback and five-eighth for the Souths Logan magies. He led his team to the queensland Cup grand final.
Remarkable Queensland Cup Stats
In 19 games for the Magies this year, Siegwalt demonstrated a dynamic attacking skillset. He scored eight tries, delivered 13 try assists, and recorded 18 linebreak assists, averaging an impressive 128 running metres per game. This performance positioned him as a potential understudy to Reece Walsh at the Brisbane Broncos, after initially securing a train-and-trial deal with the club.
Strategic Acquisition for the Future
The Rabbitohs’ acquisition of Siegwalt appears strategically timed, coinciding with the likely retirement of veteran five-eighth cody Walker, who will be 37 in 2027. This provides a clear pathway for Siegwalt to compete for a key position in the South Sydney lineup.
Rabbitohs head of recruitment and retention, Mark Ellison, emphasized Siegwalt’s maturity and dedication. “Latrell is a mature young footballer looking for his chance to play at the NRL level and with hard work and dedication he can earn that opportunity here at South Sydney,” Ellison stated. He also highlighted Siegwalt’s lifelong connection to the club, noting his dream to represent the Rabbitohs.
