Ibiza Targeted by Organized Crime
A British citizen has been arrested in Ibiza as part of a crackdown on a criminal organization allegedly responsible for a recent surge in burglaries and vehicle thefts on the Balearic island. the examination, dubbed ‘Operation Lezo Ball’ by Spain’s Guardia Civil, began following the theft of a van from an industrial estate on July 14th, leading police to a group of British nationals staying in Sant Antoni de Portmany.
Authorities believe the group specifically travelled to Ibiza with the intent to commit crimes, exploiting the island’s popularity as a tourist destination. Recent weeks have seen a noticeable increase in both burglaries and violent robberies, prompting a focused response from law enforcement.
Stolen Vehicles and High-Value Theft
A key breakthrough in the investigation occurred on August 9th with the revelation of an SUV-style vehicle bearing fake British number plates. The vehicle, confirmed to have been stolen in the UK prior to its use in Ibiza, was found abandoned and deliberately set alight - a clear attempt to destroy evidence, according to the Majorca Daily Bulletin.
CCTV footage captured the vehicle speeding away from a luxury goods store in Marina Botafoch, smashing through a road barrier during its escape with approximately €100,000 (roughly £86,000) worth of stolen merchandise. Images released by police show a hooded and masked individual inside the store, loading boxes of stolen goods for an accomplice.
The stolen van was later used to transport the £86,000 worth of luxury goods, a journey of approximately 20 minutes to Sant Antoni. Fortunately, local police were able to intercept the van and recover the stolen items.
One Arrest Made, Investigation Ongoing
The Guardia Civil has announced one arrest in connection with the case – a British citizen whose identity has not yet been released. Authorities state that the operation has successfully dismantled a criminal organization dedicated to vehicle theft and burglary in Ibiza.
An investigation is currently underway to determine if the arrested individual and the dismantled group are linked to any further criminal activity on the island. The Guardia Civil is urging anyone with facts to come forward.
