A British tourist,Hannah Almond,32,from Grimsby,who went missing in Peru after being robbed and left without resources,has been found and reunited with a friend. Matti, a friend of Almond’s, flew to Cusco to assist her after she was discovered by Piero Villanueva, a Peruvian citizen. Almond had been in Peru since March for a yoga retreat when the incident occurred.
Matti recounted the emotional reunion, stating that Almond embraced him and expressed her love. She was wearing pajamas given to her by a friend, having lost most of her belongings when locals burned them. The GoFundMe page set up to assist Almond has raised nearly £10,000.
Almond’s friends said she had been hoping for adventure in Peru but instead found herself in a terrifying situation. She was robbed of her passport, phone, and money. Her mental health declined, and she was found living under a bridge in Cusco.
Matti noted that almond appeared skinny but generally okay, given the circumstances.He observed that the experience had substantially affected her mindset, and she seemed to be blocking out the traumatic events.
Mark Atkinson, the British Consul in Peru, said Almond’s tourist visa has expired, placing her in an illegal situation. The embassy has offered support, but Almond has been hesitant to accept it.
‘She wrapped her arms around me and said “I love you”.’
‘When I told her about the fundraiser she felt joy and love,’ he said.‘She smiled and said thank you so much for supporting her.’
