Britain Joins Nations Demanding Gaza Ceasefire
25 Nations Demand Immediate Gaza Ceasefire Amid Escalating Violence
London, UK - In a powerful and unprecedented joint statement, foreign ministers from 25 nations have issued an urgent call for an immediate end to the war in gaza, citing the “new depths” of civilian suffering and condemning the “inhumane killing of civilians.” The coordinated appeal, including signatories from Australia,Austria,Belgium,Canada,Denmark,Estonia,Finland,France,Iceland,Ireland,Italy,Japan,Latvia,Lithuania,Luxembourg, the Netherlands,New Zealand,Norway,Poland,Portugal,Slovenia,Spain,Sweden,Switzerland, and the United kingdom, underscores a growing international consensus demanding an end to the devastating conflict.
The statement directly addresses the dire humanitarian situation, condemning “the drip feeding of aid and the inhumane killing of civilians, including children, seeking to meet their most basic needs of water and food.” It also highlights the ongoing plight of hostages held by hamas since the October 7th attacks, stating, “The hostages cruelly held captive by Hamas since 7 October 2023 continue to suffer terribly. We condemn their continued detention and call for their immediate and unconditional release.”
Calls for Negotiated Ceasefire and Release of Hostages
The foreign ministers emphasized that a negotiated ceasefire is the most viable path to securing the release of the hostages and alleviating the immense suffering of their families.”A negotiated ceasefire offers the best hope of bringing them home and ending the agony of their families,” the statement read.
The international pressure comes as Israeli forces have intensified their operations in the central Gazan city of Deir al-Balah, a move that has raised concerns about the potential presence of hostages. The statement implicitly urged Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu to consider diplomatic overtures, noting, “Further bloodshed serves no purpose.”
US Peace Efforts and Regional Stability
The 25 nations reaffirmed their ”complete support to the efforts of the US, Qatar and Egypt” in mediating a resolution. They also signaled a willingness to take further action to bolster an immediate ceasefire and advance a political pathway towards lasting security and peace for both Israelis and Palestinians, and also the wider region. “We are prepared to take further action to support an immediate ceasefire and a political pathway to security and peace for Israelis, Palestinians and the entire region,” the statement concluded.
Meanwhile, Hamas-controlled health officials reported that the Palestinian death toll since Israel’s retaliatory attacks following the October 7th terror attacks, which claimed the lives of 1,200 people, has now surpassed 59,000. The ongoing conflict continues to exact a devastating human cost, amplifying the urgency of the international community’s call for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
In a separate incident highlighting the impact of the conflict on civilian infrastructure, a parish priest, Gabriel Romanelli, is reportedly receiving treatment after Israel struck the Holy Family Catholic Church in Gaza.
