Updated June 03, 2025
London — Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Monday that the United Kingdom will significantly increase its military spending. Plans include building new nuclear-powered attack submarines and preparing the army for potential war in Europe. The move is designed to send a strong message to Moscow and Washington, signaling Britain’s commitment to defense and global security.
Starmer emphasized the need to address the threat posed by Russia, pledging comprehensive changes to British defenses, the most extensive in over three decades. He stated that the current threat landscape is more serious and unpredictable than any time since the Cold War.
Speaking at a navy shipyard in Scotland, Starmer said, “The threat we face is more serious, more immediate and more unpredictable than at any time since the Cold war.”
A New Era of Threats
Like other NATO members, the U.K. has reassessed its defense posture following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The announced military plans are a direct response to a strategic defense review commissioned by Starmer and led by george Robertson, former U.K. defense secretary and NATO secretary general. This review marks the first as 2021 and comes at a time of meaningful global upheaval.
The previous major defense review occurred shortly before Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. At that time, than-Prime Minister Boris Johnson suggested that large-scale tank battles in Europe were a thing of the past. However, events in Ukraine have demonstrated the need for a renewed focus on conventional military capabilities and military spending.
