Two long-haul flights, both operated with Boeing 787 dreamliners, were forced to turn back mid-flight on Sunday due to separate incidents. A British Airways flight from London to Chennai, India, experienced a technical issue, while a Lufthansa flight en route to Hyderabad, India, from Frankfurt, germany, received a bomb threat.
British Airways flight BA35, utilizing a Boeing 787-8, departed London’s Heathrow Airport at 1:16 p.m., following a brief delay. However, the flight circled the Strait of Dover several times before returning to Heathrow. The airline confirmed the diversion was a “standard precaution” due to a technical problem.
“The aircraft returned to Heathrow as a standard precaution after reports of a technical issue,” British Airways said. “The flight landed safely with crew and customers disembarking as they normally would, and our teams are working hard to get their journeys back on track quickly.”
In a separate incident, Lufthansa flight LH 752, operated by a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, departed Frankfurt around 6 p.m., headed for Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad. After nearly two hours in the air, while flying over Bulgarian airspace, the aircraft reversed course and returned to Frankfurt following a reported bomb threat.
An airport official in Hyderabad confirmed the bomb threat prompted the diversion. The flight had been scheduled to arrive in Hyderabad at approximately 1:20 a.m.on Monday.
