British Deployment of Nyan Drones at Tapa
The British military brought the Nyan systems to Estonia in the spring during the Spring Storm exercise, according to Postimees and ERR. British Army spokesperson Melissa Terry explained that the drones have already seen active use in exercises and training across the country. The deployment allows for the integration of this new capability with targeting, mission planning, and digital fire control systems.
Terry noted that the new solution involves a specialized unit equipped with highly mobile vehicles, modern weapon systems, and drones tailored specifically for the Estonian operational environment. For operational security reasons, the British Army has not disclosed the exact number of Nyan systems currently operating in Estonia.
Technical Specifications of the BAE Systems Munition
Manufactured by defense company BAE Systems, Nyan is a jet-powered single-use drone categorized as a One Way Effector. It features a 2.9-meter wingspan, a maximum takeoff weight exceeding 75 kilograms, a payload capacity under 20 kilograms, and a top speed of approximately 220 km/h. ERR reported that the weapon is launched using a pneumatic catapult and compares closely in function to the Iranian-designed Shahed.
Terry described the drone as an unmanned, self-propelled system built to complete a single mission along a pre-planned, non-ballistic trajectory. The British Army utilizes two Estonian-made launch systems to deploy Nyan: the Ely PL80 and the Threod CATA BT. While the British Army operates the drone from land, Britain’s Royal Navy also utilizes Nyan attack drones and recently conducted at-sea launch trials.
Strategic Integration Within NATO Defense Planning
The integration of Nyan into allied drills occurred during the spring when various international units were stationed in Estonia, offering an opportunity to test the drones during division-level operations. Postimees and ERR reported that this deployment strengthens the United Kingdom’s ongoing contribution to NATO deterrence and defense.

This capability arrives following a defense cooperation action plan signed by Estonia and the United Kingdom in Tallinn in July. That agreement superseded an earlier armored unit concept that had relied on heavy hardware such as Challenger 2 main battle tanks and Warrior infantry fighting vehicles.
