What Happened?
A stabbing attack occurred on a train near Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, yesterday, injuring 11 people. Two of the injured are in life-threatening condition. British Transport Police (BTP) responded to the incident and initially declared a major incident,even briefly using the code word ‘Plato’ – reserved for marauding terror attacks – before rescinding that declaration.
Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder: a 32-year-old black British national and a 35-year-old British national of Caribbean descent. Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Initial Reports and Updates
Initial reports indicated that nine people suffered life-threatening injuries. However, police clarified that after treatment, four people were discharged, leaving two in a life-threatening condition as of this morning.
Ten people were initially taken to hospital, with an eleventh person self-presenting at a hospital later.
Why It Wasn’t Terrorism
Superintendent john Loveless of the British transport police stated that there is currently nothing to suggest the attack was a terrorist incident. Counter-terrorism police initially supported the investigation but have since stepped back. The investigation is now being led by BTP.
“This is a British Transport Police investigation,and we continue to work to establish at pace,the full circumstances and the motivations that have led to this incident,” Superintendent Loveless said. “At this early stage, it would not be appropriate to speculate on the cause of this incident.”
Eyewitness Accounts
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene. One eyewitness reported seeing one of the suspects waving a large knife before being tasered by police. Another eyewitness, olly Foster, told the BBC that someone ran past him shouting that someone was stabbing “everyone, everything.” He discovered he was covered in blood after the attack.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla expressed their shock and sympathy, stating they were “truly appalled” by the attack and sending their deepest sympathy to those affected and their loved ones. They also thanked the emergency services for their response.
