Tom Pidcock’s participation in the upcoming Ardennes Classics remains uncertain following a severe crash during the Volta a Catalunya. The Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team has indicated there is currently no set deadline for the British rider’s return to competition as he recovers from significant knee injuries.
The incident occurred during stage five of the Volta a Catalunya on March 27, 2026. While descending the Collada Sobirana, Pidcock overshot a corner and fell into a ravine.
Despite the severity of the fall, Pidcock was able to alert his team via radio and eventually remounted his bicycle. He completed the stage, though he finished 29 minutes behind the stage winner, Jonas Vingegaard.
Medical Evaluation and Injury Details
Subsequent medical evaluations and imaging scans revealed the extent of the damage to Pidcock’s right knee and wrist. The scans confirmed that the rider sustained bone bruising to both the tibia and fibula, which included small stress fractures.

Further diagnostics identified a suspected injury to the anterolateral ligament, with a small bone fragment pulled away at the attachment point. The rider was also diagnosed with a moderate grade 2 injury to the medial collateral ligament and a sprain of the lateral collateral ligament.
In addition to the ligament damage, medical reports noted significant swelling within the knee joint and damage to Pidcock’s right wrist.
Team doctor Lorenz Emmert provided an initial assessment of the situation before the full imaging results were finalized.
Due to his crash he suffered injuries, most likely bone and ligament damage in particular to his right knee and also right wrist

The Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team confirmed the decision to pull Pidcock from the remainder of the Volta a Catalunya, stating that the injuries made his continued participation in the race unviable.
Impact on Spring Classics Campaign
The crash has placed Pidcock’s spring schedule in doubt. Prior to the accident, the British rider was scheduled to compete in a series of high-profile events, including:
- De Brabantse Pijl
- Amstel Gold Race
- La Flèche Wallonne
- Liège-Bastogne-Liège
Pidcock expressed an optimistic tone regarding his eventual return, though he acknowledged the immediate impossibility of maintaining his original schedule.
Speaking on his withdrawal, Pidcock stated We did everything to try to make it to the start but it’s not possible
. He further explained that he fought to finish the stage yesterday
on March 27, 2026, to ensure he had the option to continue in the race, but noted that his focus has now shifted to recovery.
The team’s decision to avoid setting a specific return deadline suggests a cautious approach to his rehabilitation. The combination of bone bruising, stress fractures, and multiple ligament injuries in the right knee typically requires a structured recovery period to avoid further complications.
