British Tourist Arrested After Hong Kong Airport Kiosk Rampage
A 35-year-old British man was arrested Monday after a video circulated online showing him damaging self-service check-in kiosks at Hong Kong International Airport. The incident occurred in the departure hall of Terminal 1 around 6 a.m. Local time.
Footage shared on social media platforms, including Threads, depicts a man pushing over the kiosks and then using a metal post to smash them, according to reports. Airport Authority personnel and security responded to the scene, attempting to halt the damage before contacting police.
Authorities say the man damaged approximately 10 self-check-in kiosks, along with railings and nearby counters in Aisle J of Terminal 1. “Airport Authority staff and airport security personnel rushed to the scene and warned the man to stop causing further damage,” a spokesperson for the authority said. “Police have arrested the man and launched an investigation.”
Police confirmed the suspect is a 35-year-old British tourist. He was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and possession of “Part 1” poisons. A search of his backpack revealed four Viagra pills, a prescription drug illegal to possess in Hong Kong without a valid prescription.
Possessing Viagra without a prescription in Hong Kong carries a potential penalty of up to two years imprisonment and a fine of HK$100,000 (approximately £9,390).
Local media reports indicate the man arrived in Hong Kong in November and was reportedly planning to depart Monday morning. He allegedly became emotionally unstable while at Aisle J, initially knocking down railings with his trolley before targeting the kiosks and a glass panel. He was apprehended at the airport’s bus unloading area.
The incident prompted a swift response from airport staff and security, who intervened before police arrived to make the arrest. The investigation is ongoing.
