Brittney Griner, the WNBA star detained in Russia on drug charges since February, has penned a letter to President Joe Biden appealing for his intervention. Griner, facing a potential 10-year sentence, conveyed her fears of indefinite imprisonment in the handwritten message.
Griner’s representatives shared excerpts of the letter, emphasizing that the full content would remain private between her and the president. In the letter,Griner,31,noted the upcoming Fourth of July holiday and the pain it brings,given her current circumstances. She also mentioned that she cast her first-ever vote for Biden in the 2020 election, expressing her belief in him to help restore her freedom and allow her to continue doing good.
“As I sit here in a Russian prison, alone with my thoughts… I’m terrified I might be here forever,” Griner wrote.
Adrienne Watson, a national Security Council spokesperson, stated that the White House is working “aggressively” to secure Griner’s release, asserting that Russia is wrongfully detaining her. watson added that top officials are in regular contact with Griner’s family and teammates.
Though, Griner’s wife, Cherelle, expressed disappointment that she has not yet heard directly from Biden regarding the letter. She told CBS that the lack of a personal meeting with the president was “very disheartening.”
“it kills me every time … when I have to write her, and she’s asking, ‘have you met with him yet?’ And I have to say, ‘No,'” Cherelle said.
