Writer Chris Chibnall, known for Broadchurch and Doctor Who, spoke at the Hay Festival of Literature and Arts about his decision to end the acclaimed crime drama in 2017. He feared the series would become repetitive, like “Midsomer Murders,” if it continued wiht recurring violence.
Chibnall appeared alongside Icelandic crime novelist Ragnar Jónasson in a conversation led by BBC presenter Julia Wheeler. The discussion covered his new crime novel, Death at the White Hart, set in Dorset. An audience member questioned the choice of location, given Dorset’s low murder rate.
Chibnall explained that the “dissonance is what’s interesting.” He emphasized the rarity of violent events in rural areas and how that impacts characters and police. he added, “Ultimately, the genre is the prism into humanity. These are extreme events and so that’s what you were exploring really.”
Broadchurch, which aired for three seasons on ITV, centered on a police examination into a child’s death in a fictional Dorset town. The discussion at Hay also included a tease about Chibnall’s upcoming Netflix project: a three-part adaptation of Agatha Christie’s The seven Dials Mystery. The cast includes Mia McKenna-Bruce, helena Bonham Carter, and Martin Freeman.

Chibnall said the Netflix series will feature “stately homes, vintage cars,a big dance band,[and a] pretty good budget,” adding that it’s “a lot of fun and it’s a great story.”
