Ephs Defeat Broncos 62-49 in Season Opener
The Williams men’s basketball team won against SUNY-Delhi with a final score of 62-49 in their season opener.
In the second half, senior guard Isiah Barnes scored for Delhi, narrowing the gap to 38-33. Despite this, Williams’ Brandon Roughley quickly responded with a basket. Soon after, Gustarling Louis from Delhi hit a critical shot, bringing the score to 42-41. Jason Tagios then gave the Broncos their first lead since early in the game with a mid-range jumper.
However, Hudson Hansen of Williams answered back with a dunk, helping his team regain momentum. Hansen led the Ephs with 21 points, showcasing his skills throughout the game. Other players, including Sammy Cooley and Roughley, contributed with key assists and points, maintaining the lead as the game progressed.
Williams’ defense was strong; they held Delhi to just 27% from the field in the first half and limited their three-point shooting to 10%. Coach Kevin App praised his team’s resilience, stating that their “defense and mentality” were crucial for the win.
Ten players participated, with Aidan Yates and Jackson Rein scoring their first points for the team. Coach App emphasized the importance of player rotations, especially with many underclassmen needing game experience early in the season.
The Ephs will play again against SUNY Oneonta on Wednesday at 7 PM. Coach App plans to make adjustments based on observations from this game to strengthen the team moving forward.
