Police charged Chase Lackard, a 19-year-old man, after he was shot by officers in the Bronx on Friday. He allegedly pointed a loaded 9mm semi-automatic weapon at them.
The shooting occurred around 3:10 p.m. at 755 White Plains Rd. in Soundview. Officers arrived in response to reports about a large dispute involving firearms. As they approached, Lackard reportedly aimed his gun at them. The officers returned fire, hitting him twice in the leg, and then provided assistance until he was transported to a hospital.
Police also found a knife at the scene. The incident was recorded on body-worn cameras and external surveillance, but the footage is not yet public.
Lackard had previously been arrested in August for weapons charges. Despite the prosecutor’s request for bail, he was released. NYPD Chief of Patrol John Chell expressed concern that Lackard was able to be on the streets with a loaded weapon after his prior arrest.
A second suspect from the incident remains at large. Chell criticized the criminal justice system, stating that individuals like Lackard should not be on the streets. He highlighted his frustration with recent violent incidents in New York, emphasizing the need for change in the system.
