Brotherly Betrayal: The Shocking True Story Behind the Menéndez Murders, Now Exposed on Netflix
Netflix’s New True Crime Series: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez
Netflix continues to expand its true crime catalog with a new series called “Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez.” This production is based on a high-profile American case and is set to be released on September 19. The series is created by the makers of the successful series “Dahmer.”
The Story Behind Lyle and Eric Menendez, the Main Characters of the New Netflix Series
The new Netflix series tells the case of the brothers Lyle and Erik Menendez, who murdered their parents, José and Mary Louise, nicknamed Kitty, on August 20, 1989. José and Mary Louise were prominent executives from the world of entertainment, brutally murdered with shotgun blasts in their luxury mansion in Beverly Hills.
The trial of the Menéndez brothers became an unprecedented media spectacle, as Lyle and Erik claimed that their parents had been killed in self-defense. They justified this by stating that they were victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse by their father for years.
Erik and Lyle were 18 and 21 years old, respectively, at the time of the events. After a trial that took seven years, they were finally found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of being eligible for benefits. The authorities sent them to separate prisons due to the risk that together they would plan to escape.
The series includes performances by Javier Bardem (Jose Menendez), Chloe Sevigny (Mary Louise, Kitty Menendez), Cooper Koch (Erik Menéndez), Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Lyle Menendez), Nathan Lane (Dominick Dunne), and Ari Graynor (Leslie Abramson).
