In a move that sent shockwaves across the hockey world, the Vegas Golden Knights have fired head coach Bruce Cassidy with just eight games remaining before the playoffs. The decision was made on Sunday, March 29, 2026, marking a significant shakeup for the franchise as the postseason approaches.

At first glance, the decision is puzzling to outside observers. The Golden Knights hold a 32–26–16 record this season, which falls short of expectations, especially after the blockbuster offseason addition of Mitch Marner. Despite the struggles, the team still sits at 80 points, comfortably holding the third seed in the Pacific Division. Given their position in a weak division, they remain a near lock for the postseason.

Since entering the league, Vegas has built a reputation as one of the NHL’s most aggressive organizations, unafraid to make bold, even controversial decisions in pursuit of a championship. Cassidy becomes the latest casualty, replaced by veteran bench boss John Tortorella. This move marks the franchise’s fourth head coach in just nine seasons.

Golden Knights Secure Veteran Replacement

The Golden Knights moved quickly to secure a replacement, hiring John Tortorella following Cassidy’s dismissal. Tortorella has not coached in the NHL since the Philadelphia Flyers fired him on March 27, 2025. However, he brings extensive experience, ranking ninth in NHL history with 770 wins. He previously won the Stanley Cup with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2004.

Golden Knights general manager Kelly McCrimmon explained the rationale behind the change in a statement regarding the hiring of Tortorella.

We believe that a change is necessary for us to return to the level of play that is expected of our club. With John Tortorella, we bring in a Stanley Cup champion as well as one of the most experienced and respected coaches in the NHL. His guidance will be a great asset to our team at the pivotal point in the season we currently face.

Kelly McCrimmon, Golden Knights General Manager

The team has struggled recently, going 3–5–2 in their past 10 games and 8–15–4 since January 19, 2026. They are currently four points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings, the first team below the cut line in the Western Conference. This is not the first time Vegas has made such a move mid-season, continuing their cut-throat approach that values success above all else.

Cassidy’s Tenure and Resume

Bruce Cassidy finishes his tenure in Vegas with a stellar 178–99–43 record, along with a 24–16 playoff mark. Most notably, he led the Golden Knights to a Stanley Cup championship in 2023. Born on May 20, 1965, in Ottawa, Ontario, Cassidy was selected in the first round, 18th by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1983 NHL entry draft before transitioning to coaching.

Leafs fans know him all too well from his previous tenure. During his time in Boston from 2016 to 2022, Cassidy’s Bruins repeatedly got the better of Toronto in the playoffs, knocking them out in 2018 and 2019. His Boston teams made a Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2019 and were structured, disciplined, and consistently among the league’s best at controlling play. The Bruins announced they had relieved Cassidy of his duties on June 7, 2022, following a first-round playoff loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

With a résumé like that, there is little doubt he won’t be on the market for long. The Leafs should seriously consider making a strong push to bring him in. Their cut-throat approach, valuing success above all else, is something the Maple Leafs could learn from. A major change in Toronto feels increasingly necessary. While the question of who should be the next head coach remains open, Cassidy’s sudden availability makes him an obvious frontrunner.

Was Cassidy Really the Problem in Vegas?

Before declaring him the perfect solution in Toronto, It’s worth asking: did Cassidy actually deserve to be fired? The numbers suggest otherwise. Vegas has struggled this season, but the underlying metrics paint a very different picture regarding the root causes of their performance.

  • Goaltending has been a disaster. Carter Hart, Adin Hill, and Akira Schmid all posted save percentages below .900, with Hill, expected to be the starter, sitting at a brutal .866. No system can survive that level of goaltending.
  • Offensive process is solid, results are not. The Knights rank 13th in expected goals for at 5-on-5 but only 20th in shooting percentage (9.11%). They are generating chances, they just aren’t finishing.
  • Defensive structure is elite. Vegas ranks 3rd in expected goals against and is top-10 in limiting high-danger chances. That is a direct reflection of coaching.
  • PDO tells the story. At 97.57, second worst in the league, Vegas has been plagued by poor puck luck, a combination of bad shooting and worse goaltending.

Taken together, these metrics suggest that Vegas has been doing many of the right things both offensively and defensively. There is always room for improvement, but the bigger issue has been poor finishing and unreliable goaltending, two areas that are often outside of a coach’s control. The Maple Leafs, meanwhile, would welcome underlying numbers like these.

The case for Cassidy is strong. Outside of someone like Pete DeBoer, there may not be a more qualified coach available on the market. As the Golden Knights prepare for the playoffs under new leadership, the hockey world will be watching to see where Cassidy lands next.
