Bruce Gilden Captures Life in Los Angeles

February 10, 2026 – Renowned street photographer Bruce Gilden, a member of Magnum Photos, recently shared a new portrait from Los Angeles, California, on his Instagram account. The photograph, titled “Corey,” offers a glimpse into Gilden’s signature close-up style.

Gilden, born in Brooklyn, New York in 1946, has become celebrated for his raw and powerful portrayals of urban life. He joined Magnum Photos in 1998, solidifying his position as one of the most important contemporary figures in street photography. Magnum Photos itself is a photographic cooperative owned and run by its photographer members, known for authentic visual storytelling.

The photographer is known for his intensely personal approach, famously stating, “I’m known for getting close, and the older I get, the closer I get.” This philosophy is evident in his work, which often features strikingly direct and intimate portraits of individuals encountered on the streets.

Gilden’s artistic journey began not with a formal education in photography, but with a childhood spent largely disconnected from the arts. He described growing up in a household “that had no books and no culture whatsoever,” but acknowledges the influence of television. His conscious interest in the arts truly developed at the age of 18 when he began visiting museums in New York City.

Initially enrolling in a Sociology course at Penn State University, Gilden found the classes uninspiring and ultimately left to pursue his passion for visual art. He briefly considered a career in acting before purchasing his first camera.

While influenced by artists, Gilden specifically cites Van Gogh as a strong influence, noting the dramatic quality and striking colors in the painter’s work. Interestingly, Gilden initially worked exclusively in black and white photography.

New York City holds a special place in the world of street photography, providing endless inspiration for generations of photographers. Gilden’s work, however, extends beyond the confines of New York, as demonstrated by his recent photograph from Los Angeles. Previous work has also taken him to locations such as Las Vegas, Nevada; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; and Iowa, USA.

Gilden’s style is widely regarded as striking and recognizable, earning him a place among the most influential street photographers in the genre’s history. He served as a judge for the 2025 Street Photography Award, demonstrating his continued engagement with and support of the photographic community.
